Oudtshoorn

Overview

Situated in the heart of the Klein Karoo in South Africa’s Western Cape, Oudtshoorn is one of the country’s most distinctive inland tourism destinations. Surrounded by rugged mountains, semi-desert landscapes, and dramatic passes, the town is internationally famous for its ostrich industry, spectacular caves, adventure activities, and rich cultural heritage.

Oudtshoorn offers visitors a completely different experience from the coastal Garden Route towns nearby. It combines Karoo hospitality, wildlife encounters, outdoor adventure, and natural wonders in a setting known for its warm climate and striking scenery.

Travel Tips
Oudtshoorn is inland in the Klein Karoo and is best reached by road. There are no commercial flights directly into the town, so most visitors travel via nearby airports or scenic self-drive routes.
Getting There
For most travellers, the best option is: Fly to George Airport → rent a car → drive to Oudtshoorn OR Self-drive via Route 62 (Cape Town → Oudtshoorn) for a classic South African road trip experience.
Safety
Oudtshoorn is generally considered a moderately safe small town and tourist destination in South Africa’s Garden Route/Klein Karoo region. Most visitors experience it without any issues, especially when staying in tourist areas and using normal travel awareness. It is not a high-crime city like major metros, but—like most towns in South Africa—it does have petty crime, so basic caution is still important.
